Lennie Niehaus, is an award-winning composer, arranger, and performer whose career has included a kaleidoscope of musical experiences. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Niehaus received his Bachelor of Arts Degree Cum Laude and teaching credential from California State University, Los Angeles. Soon after, in 1952, he joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra with the exception of two years of service in the U.S. Army. He performed and recorded with Kenton until 1960, winning the Downbeat Magazine "New Star - Alto Sax" Award in 1955. During this time, he also wrote for and recorded his own albums, and contributed compositions and arrangements to the Kenton library. After leaving Kenton's orchestra, Mr. Niehaus became increasingly active as a commercial arranger and composer. His film scoring credits include: Sesame Street Presents Follow That Bird; Tightrope; City Heat; Heartbreak Ridge; and White Hunter, Black Heart. His latest film scores were for the Clint Eastwood pictures Pale Rider, Unforgiven, The Bridges Of Madison County, Absolute Power, True Crime, Space Cowboys, and Bird, the award-winning tribute to legendary bebop artist Charlie Parker, for which he received a Cannes Film Festival Technical Achievement Award and British Academy Award nomination for Best Score. In 1994 he won an Emmy for his score for the Showtime film Lush Life. Mr. Niehaus continues to compose for film and television and remains active on the music education scene as a clinician, performer, and adjudicator. He has numerous published works for concert band, orchestra, and jazz ensemble to his credit, as well as several texts on saxophone pedagogy.

49907	Airport Road (String Orchestra) M
	Airport Road is written for a Grade 3+ string orchestra. The viola part is written for violin III as an option to strengthen the viola section if necessary. The title was derived from the street that the publisher recently moved to in Alto, New Mexico. The composition is written in an ABA rondo form with a moderately allegro section, a beautiful lyrical 'B' section, played in a gentle and smooth fashion, and a return to the 'A' section and a coda. The violins are required to play in fourth position, and there are interesting parts for all players.
37960	Algadoon (String Orchestra) E
	Scored in D and G major, this adaptation of a piece originally written by Henry Purcell in the 17th century is a marvelous addition to the concert literature for grade 1 string orchestras of today. Playable entirely in 1st position, all sections share melodic duties. Optional piano and percussion (snare and bass drums) parts are included.

	This award-winning composer has written an original overture that is a musical panorama constructed in ternary form. It opens with a strong and percussive statement with a middle section of long melodic phrases in the strings and woodwinds. The opening theme then returns, culminating in a majestic close. First violins require some 5th position, all others are playable in 1st position.

	Written in the Baroque concerto grosso form, this work features two groups: (1) the concertina soloist (2 Vns,cello) and (2) the ripiano, the rest of the strings, serving in a responsive role. 	This Medium Easy adaptation of the immortal Duke Ellington classic features interesting jazz rhythms, melodic material for all sections, and optional rhythm section and solo parts. Since this song uses very few chord changes, it's a good choice for first-time improvisers. Overall, the chart consists of a swingin' first chorus, an optional solo section on the second chorus, a third 'shout' chorus, a return to the bridge of the first chorus, and a coda. 	This Grade 2 arrangement by Niehaus of two favorite Christmas carols is sure to become an annual favorite. After a lovely introduction, the piece begins in G major with ‘Angels We Have Heard on High.’ A beautiful transition to D major leads to Mendelssohn’s well-known ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,’ followed by a stately Maestoso ending.

	Duke Ellington's classic has been arranged here by Lennie Niehaus at the grade 3 level for string orchestra with optional rhythm section parts. The melody is shared by different sections and a chorus for solos is offered. The solo section in this moderate swing arrangement can be repeated for many soloists, played by an entire string section, or omitted entirely. An idiomatic written solo is provided for each instrument for those soloists not able to improvise. This is a great way to get your strings playing with a jazz concept.

	Gainsborough Overture is a spirited composition for string orchestra with a slow and expressive middle section. It begins with a Mozart/early Beethoven feeling with melodies moving from highs to lows. Dynamics should be carefully observed during this section. The slow section changes from D to G major and contains inner moving parts. There is a D.C. Al Coda, with the Coda stating the melody of the spirited first section. A build begins sixteen measures from the end to a fortissimo and a grandieose ending. A third violin/treble clef viola part is provided.

Scored for jazz string orchestra with optional rhythm section, the arrangement features written out or improvised solos for violin, viola, cello, or bass. 	A charming Grade 2 composition for full or string orchestra. The composer paints a picture of gracious living when life was unhurried. An Allegro moderato introduction is followed by the opening theme, presented by strings with optional piano. The full orchestra enters to finish the first section. The strings play a light-hearted section, conjuring visions of lawn croquet, tea, and crumpets. The full orchestra enters robustly to contrast with the elegant strings. A ¾ Moderato takes us inside to the ballroom for a graceful waltz. Last, the D. S. al Coda leads to a noble, rallentando ending.

	Marked 'allegro con guisto', this spirited grade 2 original in the Baroque concerto grosso form features violin soloist, string quartet (concertino) and the full group (ripieno). 	The composer looks back into his past when he was, learning violin from his papa. A charming Grade 1 work for full orchestra, Momentos From the Past uses a simple melody to allow beginning musicians the gratification of playing as a group. Based on a five-note scale, the melody begins with a unison question in the string and wind sections, followed by a harmonic answer. This is excellent for honing intonation, rhythmic skills, and ensemble playing. The supportive piano and percussion parts reinforce.

	Grade 2+ groups will enjoy this well-arranged material from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's String Quartet in D Minor, K.421. Mozart's musical output seems amazing when one considers his short life span (1756-1791). Among his highly regarded string quartets, this charming treatment gives interesting material to all players.
37518	Nearness of You, The (from the film Romance In The Dark) (String Orchestra) M
	This arrangement of the Ned Washington and Hoagy Carmichael classic from the Paramount Picture 'Romance In The Dark' is scored in a slow ballad style for grade 3 groups. As in all charts from this popular new series, the rhythm section parts are optional, as are the improvised or written solo section. If no soloists are to be featured, the solo section may be cut from the performance as per the provided directions. Modern chords and melodies will give all players interesting and challenging parts, and backgounds are provided in the string parts during the solo section, making solos possible even if no rhythm section is used.
49046	Oaks Overture, The (Full Orchestra) ME
	This piece opens in a majestic march style (key of G) and has a contrasting middle section in 3/4 (key of C) that is in a legato style. A D. S. repeats the march theme and a 7-measure coda finishes it off. This would be an excellent tool to reinforce following the "road map" of the D. S. and coda. All sections have great parts.
49768	Overture Contempo (String Orchestra) M
	This contemporary composition has an energetic first section as the melodies shift to different parts of the orchestra. An expressive second section with pizzicato accompaniment follows with a D, C, and short coda. Playable in first position, watch out for accidentals and tempo changes!
49919	Pastiche for Strings (String Orchestra) MD
	Pastiche for Strings consists of various moods and feelings. The opening mysterioso is played slowly and uses triplet eighth notes for a sense of urgency. This leads into a low string somber melody that moves into the higher strings. A slow, expressive section is followed by a fast section. The coda builds to the end in a grandiose fashion.
37621	Pick and Choose (Permanently Out of Print) (String Orchestra) E
	As you may have guessed this piece is a delightful series of contrasting pizzicato and arco passages. Scored for beginning groups, the key of D major puts grade 1 players in familiar territory. All sections share in the melodic lead at one time or another, and optional parts for the piano and percussion(snare drum, triangle, bass drum) can be used to enhance concert presentations at the director's discretion.

	This is a charming waltz in G major, evolving to other key centers such as C major without changing key signatures. Dynamics and bowings are carefully marked (and should be carefully observed!), the tempo is moderate and optional parts are included for piano and percussion. Written in a 5-part Rondo-form, all sections play the melody at some time.

	Based on the wild adventures of a swashbuckling pirate, this energetic composition will be sure to capture the imagination. Soloists will get a chance to shine in the middle section.
37731	Potpourri For Strings (String Orchestra) ME
	Potpourri For Strings is a mixture of musical moods, colors, and textures. Melodies move from one section to another and give all players a chance to experience this type of writing. There are four sections to this composition with the first section repeating by the use of a D.C. al Coda. The first is a lively section in 6/8 time with the strings romping gaily through this A-B-A song form. The second section is very expressive. The moving notes from dissonance to consonance should be brought out in the viola part. This occurs in measures 41-42, 44-46 and throughout this section. The third section is allegro and begins at measure 65, where the majestic tune is stated by the celli and basses. This melody is developed ending at measure 104. The composition then goes back to the first section with the use of a D.C. al Coda and ends in a very stately manner.
49529	Profiles for Strings (String Orchestra) M
	Profiles For Strings is a musical gem for young string orchestras. This Grade 3+ composition begins with a rousing 6/8 introduction in D major followed by an energetic gigue. Violins and violas have the melody; then cellos and basses take over. Back and forth the melody travels, providing interest and excitement for both performers and audience. A fugue-like section in G major provides further interest and leads to an exquisite g minor romantic section in 4/4. The D.S. al Coda returns to the high energy of the gigue followed by a stirring finish in the Coda.
37584	Rhapsodic Fantasy (Permanently Out of Print) (String Orchestra) ME
	This lyrical piece for grade 3 strings invites a violin soloist to play the soaring melody with all the warmth and expression the student can summon. Use of some unconventional chords adds an occassional element of surprise and for a time the cello section takes the melodic lead. For standard strings in G.
37944	Shenanigans (Permanently Out of Print) (String Orchestra) ME
	A modern sounding original, this lighter work in in ABA rondo form. All sections are given interesting lines, and progressions feature chords such as major 7ths and flatted 9ths. Key changes within the expressive "B" sectin will require careful attention, and optional piano and percussion parts are included.
49040	Skyridge Court (Full Orchestra) MD
	This is a composition of diverse orchestral colors, meter charges and various key center changes. All sections get featured, and the moods change from a solemn introduction to an energetic theme, followed by a smooth 3/4 ending in a broad, chordal fashion. A pastoral middle section is followed by a grandiose coda, where fragments of the main theme are heard before the final chords.
49524	String Beans (String Orchestra) E
	This Grade 1 composition by Lennie Niehaus is deceptively simple, and more fun than a barrel of monkeys (or perhaps a bowl of string beans)! The piece opens in an unexpected way with a unison statement of the cheerful theme in the soli violins. The violins resatate the theme, accompanied by a simple countermelody provided by violin II and viola. Cellos and basses present a new motif soli, and at last the orchestra plays tutti. The piece is full of rhythmic and dynamic contrasts that encourage beginners to hone their musical skills, listening carefully to players in their own sections as well as the other parts of the orchestra, as they learn to play in an ensemble. The last section of the piece restates the opening theme, this time with the whole orchestra, and finishes with an exciting flourish. The piece is very accessible to beginning players, and has optional parts for piano and percussion which can serve to bolster less-confident players or fill in for missing instruments.

	A wonderful little morsel from Lennie Niehaus, STRING CHEESE is a favorite treat for beginning string orchestra students and their teachers! This Grade 1 piece lives up to the Niehaus standard of being technically accessible for beginners, but musically interesting and demanding. STRING CHEESE allows beginners to hone their bowing techniques, listen carefully to intonation, and practice the intricacies of music reading. The piece is fortified with a supporting percussion and piano part that will help sustain solid rhythm and intonation.

	String Essay No. 1 is a contemporary composition featuring chords invarious forms and configuations -- sometimes they are based on the upper partials of a basic chord, sometimes they contain a series of intervals of fourths and fifths. It has a much larger sound than most music written for school string orchestra.

	What a nice piece for reinforcing minor keys in your intermediate orchestra. Accessible in the key of D minor, playable entirely in first position and pizzicato passages, as well optional piano and percussion parts make this a work that will interest everyone.
49909	String, Strang, Strung (String Orchestra) E
	This string orchestra composition is written at an appropriate level for young players so that they can both play and enjoy it. It is in the key of G major although one section is in a modal E minor key, but the note D sharp is avoided. All of the parts are written in first position, and everyone gets a chance to state the melody at one time or another. Percussion and piano parts are provided as an option, and the viola is also written for violin III in case of a shortage of violas.
49736	Sunset Hills (String Orchestra) ME
	Written in 5-part rondo form, the A section is full ensemble followed by a B section in which the lower strings play the melody and upper strings answer. The C portion is pizzicato and is a duet for 1st and 2nd violins. There is a return to A and a short coda.
49069	Symphonic Fantasy (Full Orchestra) MD
	Symphonic Fantasy, written in an A-B-A form (fast, slow and fast), consists of musical images, images of the mind, as opposed to visual sights that bring musical ideas to a composer's thoughts. The fast section contains a playful melody, some syncopated brass figures and several time signature changes. It also has a giocoso section played by the string section and then develops the playful melody in a grander fashion. The slow section uses the low strings, playing an ostinado with interesting rhythms. The fast section is heard again, and the Coda ends in a majestic manner.

	From the pen of Lennie Niehaus comes another knockout work suitable for festivals and concerts. This overture is filled with rhythmic vitality, soaring melodies, and colorful timbres. Great for high schools and youth symphonies.

	The tongue in cheek name refers to the 3/4meter, but unlike the targets of the familiar expression, this piece will always be welcome anywhere. A refreshing addition to the string orchestra repertoire, this Grade 2 minuet has Niehaus’ hall mark musical sophistication combined with accessible technique for young musicians. Musically, the piece works equally well for more advanced performers practicing sightreading, or providing music for a concerto, art fair, graduation, or awards night.

	Here's a beautiful original scored at the grade 3+ level. Written in concerto grosso form, popular during the Baroque period, several players are featured as soloists during the work. Lennie also includes a good deal of "ripieno" or full group writing to keep the rest of the group challenged.
49079	Transitions of Time (Full Orchestra) M
	This fascinating Grade 3 piece for full orchestra is a study in contrasts. Each movement evokes a different period in musical history. 'Prelude,' the tranquil first movement, is somewhat suggestive of a Gregorian chant. The dynamic second, 'Exposition,' moves ahead in time to the Romantic period, enormously intense from start to finish. 'Postlude,' the third movement, returns to the quiet character of the Prelude, developed with a more contemporary texture. Here the orchestra provides a rich harmonic accompaniment to an abstract unison melody for flutes and vibraphone as the composition concludes peacefully.

	The climb to Sierra Blanca Peak in the New Mexico desert leads to an extraordinary panoramic view including beautiful pine forests, grassy meadows, the nearby volcanic ranges, as well as the incredible White Sands off in the distance. View from the Summit, a Grade 3+ work for full orchestra, opens with a majestic introduction. The Allegro moderato employs mixed meters to keep everyone on their toes. The following slow section provides our intrepid climbers with a change of pace, and a chance to enjoy the view, and the D.S. al Coda returns to the mixed meter section, with a grandiose coda reminiscent of the introduction.
49908	Waltz and Ballade (String Orchestra) ME
	The waltz, in C, contains contrasting moods from giocoso to somber. The ballade in 4/4 shifts to the relative minor with a pretty melody and interesting chord structure. There are plenty of moving lines and D.C. al Coda. The 'giocoso' section returns in the coda as a stately, maestoso style.

	In this grade 2 original, the pensive introduction in D minor gives way to a spirited 5-part rondo in which every-one has a chance to play melodic material. A great deal of ensemble writing builds confidence, while judicious use of counterpoint develops in independence of parts. Optional piano and percussion (snare/bass drums, tringle).
49994	While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night (String Orchestra) E
	This Grade 1 arrangement by Lennie Niehaus of While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night is an excellent addition to school and church music libraries. The carol has many, many versions – some sources list as many as nine different melodies associated with the words of Nahum Tate. This version may be less familiar to audiences – it was written by John Foster (1762-1822). The score comes with optional piano and percussion parts which can act as reinforcement for young groups who may not yet be confident performers, or who may be missing one or more instruments in their class section. These parts also provide excellent opportunities for a young pianist or percussionist to perform outside his/her normal setting.

	This facinating original piece gives beginning students a chance to familarize themselves with the harmonic structures utilized in the Romantic period. The legato style calls for full, broad bowings throughout, and the 5-part rondo form gives the piece great thematic unity. Optional piano and percussion included.
37605	Wildwood (Permanently Out of Print) (String Orchestra) M
	In keeping with the concerto grosso concept on which this unique original is largely based, no section takes a back seat to the others here. Abundant thematic features performed by one or two players/sections at a time are effectively mixed with passages played by the whole group. This gives directors a rare chance to showcase the talents of their first-chair players without leaving the others behind. Occasional double-stops add special emphasis, and bowings are clearly marked.
