Answer: We do have a "no return policy" for all pieces, however, it is a different situation if you did not receive your order correctly. We ask that our customers contact us as soon as possible (with 10 business days of receiving their order) to notify us is there is a problem. While we are able to correct problems such as receive the wrong music, short shipments, or improperly printed parts, we cannot as easily take back items that were ordered in error. To avoid this as much as possible. we do have an exam score policy, which enables customers to peruse titles before purchasing them. This is good if you want to compare editions, arrangements, investigate a piece that you are not familiar with, keys, etc. We have ratings (E-easy, ME-medium easy, M-medium, MD-medium difficult, and D-difficult) printed in our Educational Catalog, which are set by the publishers. Thank you, Question: I am trying to locate an orchestral arrangement of the Gymnopedies (all of them) for orchestra. Can you help? Is the Score full or Miniature? Does the set of parts include 1 each for strings. or the usual 8 parts each for 1st, 2nd violins, viola,, cello & Bass? Do you know if the Theme music from the television series JAG available? Thank you. Answer: Thank you for your email. Yes, Nimrod (#53000) is directly taken from the complete Enigma Variations and is not an arrangement. The set of parts is $40.00, which includes the conductor score, the wind set, and the string count of 8.8.5.5.5. While, we have not yet heard of an orchestral version of the theme to JAG, band arrangements are available. So maybe an orchestral version is not too far away. In the meantime, you may try Themes and Variations to see if they have any music from JAG available. You may contact them direct by phone at (203)227-5709 or by fax at (203)227-5715. Thank you, Question: Can you tell me who has the rental for Respighi's Pines of Rome? Answer: All that we have available is the conductor score for $65.00 which includes Pines of Rome, Fountains of Rome, and Feste Romane. Respighi's Pines of Rome is available for rental only through Boosey and Hawkes. You may contact them direct by phone at (212)358-5300 or by fax at (212)358-5307. Thank you, Question: Where can I find a cheaper score for Vaughan Williams' Concerto Grosso? I only have one copy and I need 4. Also, I need to fill out my set of parts - can I order only the ones I am missing? Answer: Unfortunately, the publisher of the Vaughn Williams Concerto Grosso is the exclusive publisher of that work and owner of its copyright. The score is published only in one size (large) which currently priced at $44.95. You should be able to order extra parts to fill in your set at $4.50 per part. Thank you, Question: I am looking for an arrangement of Jeremiah Larke's Prince of Denmark's March arranged for winds, percussion, and organ. Do you know where I can find one. Answer: While we carry the Lawton arrangement of Clarke's Prince of Denmark for full orchestra, we do not carry the arrangement for winds, percussion, and organ. That particular version is available only for rental through Warner Brothers. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, Question: Hi, I would like to learn about the codes for music pieces. There seems to be many different systems for these labels. For instance, I am looking for sheet music Vivaldi's cello concerto in d, code RV 405, however, the codes in many sheet music catalogs are arranged in terms of other system, say, F/III. No. 16. I wonder whether if there is a conversion system for these two different coding so I would be ableto find the correct music. Answer: Actually, there are six different cataloging systems for Vivaldi: Fanna (F) RV Pincherle (P) Opus Tomo PR You can find a reference guide to each catalog system in a book on Vivaldi called Catalogo Numereico Tenatuo Delle Opere Strumentali by Ricordi. Luck's Music also has a chart of these different catalog systems, so that when customers inquire on a Vivaldi work, we can cross reference the title to give the appropriate price and availability information. Unfortunately, each system is different, so there is not good way of converting the cataloging systems to one another. Thank you, Question: I recently bought a number of string orchestra works from Lucks. Out of curiosity, I purchased the following: Serenade #2 in G Major by Heinrich Goetze - opus 23 so far, it looks like an interesting little work, but I have had no luck (forgive the pun) finding out about the composer. I checked the new grove, amazon.com, and a wide variety of English and German language search engines -- can you point me to some background information on the composer and/or this work? Thank you!! Answer: Unfortunately, we have not had much luck in locating information on Heinrich Goetze either. We have checked with several music references including Groves, but were unable to find any information. All that we can suggest is to continue to search music libraries at colleges and universities. (Many libraries in the country can do an interlibrary loan.) We found a listing for a Georg Heinrich Goetze (1667-1728), no other information was listed. We wish you the best of luck in your search. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, Question: I'm looking for score and parts for the Scottish (piano) Concerto by Alexander Mackenzie. Do you carry this or can you direct me to someone who does? Thanks. Answer: Alexander MacKenzie's Scottish Concerto is available for rental only through Shawnee Press. You may contact them directly by phone at (570)476-0550 or by fax at (570)476-5247. Thank you, Question: I would like to know how many singers Il Maestro di Musica, by Pergolesi needs in order to purchase it. Thanks. Answer: Il Maestro di Musica by Pergolesi requires 3 singers: Lauretta - soprano Thank you, Question: Who performed Ravel's "Bolero" in the animated film "allegro non Tropps"???? Answer: Unfortunately, we only carry sheet music and not recordings or films, so we are unable to find out who performed Bolero on "Allegro non Troppo". You may want to check on-line for information on the Internet or perhaps a place like Amazon.com would have some available information for you. Another possibility is to check at a local record store where you can search a database for a recording of Bolero. Perhaps somewhere on the sleeve, it may mention if it was the same group who performed for "Allegro non Tropp". You may even find a sound track of "Allegro non Troppo" in which case it should mention the recording artists. Thank you, Question: Thank you for such an outstanding website and great service! I am a bit confused about an entry for Rachmaninoff Vocalise. I am seeking a version for strings only, and the version # 07521 lists str=4-4-3/3/3/3. Does that mean it is for strings only? If not, where can I find a strings only version on the Rachmaninoff Voacalise? Many thanks for your help! Answer: Thank you for your email and kind words. The Rachmaninoff Vocalise listed in our catalog is actually for full orchestra. The catalog lists "str=4-4-3/3/3/3" to clarify the string count in the work, and is not meant to indicate that this piece is written for strings only. I believe that of the Vocalise versions listed in our Orchestra catalog, only the arrangement by Braden (#02952) is for strings with soprano solo in c# minor. The set of parts (includes the score and the string count of 8.8.5.5.5) currently sells for $40.00. Thank you, Question: I have been trying to find a cello part to Shostakovich's Symphony #5. When I call around, I'm told that the Shostakovich as well as other twentieth century Russian music is no longer available due to the GATT Treaty. What is the GATT Treaty? How is it possible that symphony orchestra can access the music, but individuals like myself cannot? Answer: Thank you for your email. In 1994, U.S. politicians signed a treaty, in which certain copyrights of foreign and national material with the original copyright dates as far back as 1923 were restored. The pieces affected (many of them well known Russian works from Prokofieff, Rachmaninoff, Khachaturian, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky) were no longer protected under US copyright law and were therefore considered public domain in the US but were still under copyright in their source country. The GATT treaty restored and extended the copyright protection to these works. While the music and individual parts will not be available for purchase for 96 years from the original copyright date, some compositions are represented by various publishers. Some individuals and symphonies have previously purchased the music when in public domain may continue to use the music for their own use. Recently, some scores have become available for purchase, but the orchestral parts are only available for rental, as is the case with Prokofieff's Romeo and Juliet Suite #1. If you have any questions regarding the availability of specific pieces, please contact us and we will be happy to help you. Sincerely, Question: I was told that there has been a change to the copyright law that somehow affects the availability of some musical works. Can you tell me more about this? Answer: The US Congress passed the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998, which extends all copyrighted works for an additional twenty years. As a result, no new pieces will enter the public domain until the earliest date of January 1st 2019 (based on original copyright date). While this affects all music that was still under copyright on or after January 1st 1999, this act initially affected all works that were due to enter the public domain in 1999, such as works by Debussy, Holst, Prokofiev, Warlock, Sibelius, Bridge, and Bartok including de Falla's Nights in the Gardens of Spain, Prokofiev's Piano Concerto #3, Ravel's Alborada del gracioso, and Webern's Five Pieces. These pieces will not be available for purchase in any format (score or parts) until they are entered into public domain. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, Question: I'm starting up a totally new after school and evening orchestral program in our town. I would like some advice how to begin selecting string orchestra music for three levels of orchestra: beginning, intermediate and advanced. We have no music and need to begin building a library. Our budget for music is added into the tuition for the classes so we have to be very careful on what pieces we select. How does one get started? Answer: We recommend that the first place you should start is by looking through our Educational Catalog. You will find varying levels of difficulty in the pieces here and all are listed in the catalog. The next place to look is to contact some of the local conductors in your area for ideas for good pieces good arrangers. With limited budgets, many orchestras borrow music from one another, and this may be ideal for some pieces when you are just beginning your library. You may even want to post this question on the bulletin board of our website or similar newsgroups to find what your colleagues have to add. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, |
