| Description: Gustav Holst wrote Christmas Day in 1910, during his tenure as musical director of London's Morley College for Working Men and Women. Subtitled a 'Choral Fantasy on Old Carols,' the original scoring is for mixed choir (SATB) with full orchestra or organ. The string orchestra arrangement is true to the original work, with the important choral and instrumental lines woven into a single musical fabric. The result is a delightful interplay of four traditional carols (in order of appearance): 'Good Christian Men, Rejoice!;' 'God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen;' 'Come Ye Lofty, Come Ye Lowly;' and 'The First Nowell.' |
