| Description: This overture is from one of Handel’s most popular operas. The title character, Alcina, is a sorceress who transforms her lovers into rocks, streams, trees, and wild beasts. Composed in 1735, this was one of Handel’s last successful works in this genre. The overture was written in the typical French overture form with a stately opening dominated by dotted rhythms, followed by an energetic fugal allegro with driving motor rhythms. |
