In Gaelic, the name of this railway translates to ‘Iron Road to the Isles,’ hence the name of the piece. The main theme, which is played in upper and lower strings, as well as the descant in the 1st violin part, are intended to evoke the experience of journeying the Iron Road to the lush and magical highlands.
