| Description: By the time Leopold Stokowski discussed an orchestral recording project with Percy Grainger devoted to his popular favorites, Grainger had already grown tired of his signature warhorse. Despite existing scorings of it at the hands of others, Grainger had never dished up an orchestral setting of his own for Country Gardens. In just four days, Grainger finally committed his ideas onto paper completing his own inventive scoring of this perennial. Between the time Grainger completed his score to the time Stokowski discussed touches, alterations and "cuts" (even to a work of this 82 measure brevity), two complete versions existed: Grainger's original scoring (Version A) and those materials that were altered or touched up (Version B). The timpani part, penned by Grainger much later, is included in this set, but it is up to the conductor's discretion on whether or not to use it. |
